Chapter Fifty Three: Wicked Plans

Message from Lt Rafael Dominguez of las Fuerzas Armadas Mexicanas, sent late March--

Hola, Adam & amigos, greetings from sunny-- and corrupt --Mexico. My anti-drug cartel army unit has been secretly monitoring telephone communications between drug boss Salvador deVega and his various agents and carteleros. Here's some snippets that might be of interest to you.

Good old Don Salvador is communicating with a special agent he uses for assassinations now and then, and when I say "special" I mean it: Joséf Andreas Garcia is reputed to be a brujo, a Nahuatl Indian wizard or shaman, a real old-fashioned witch doctor. He looks like some scrawny little old man but has a reputation for being a very deadly assassin. So watch out. Your amigo, Raf.

"Buenas, Señor deVega You have a special assignment for me?"

"At last! It's been ten days since my first call!"

"You know I spend time in the desert, there's no phone service out there."

"I gave you a satellite phone, it gets reception everywhere in the world!"

"I do not take a phone with me out in the desert, Señor, that defeats the whole purpose of..."

"Look, Don Joséf, don't give me any of that mystical brujo shit, nobody keeps ME waiting for ten days! Maybe I should remind you of who I..."

"Don Salvador," patiently, calmly, but with authority, "we have discussed this before: men of power, such as you and I, should not threaten one another. If you remind me of your power I must remind you of mine."

A pause, then respectfully and perhaps even cautiously, "No, you're right, excuse me, Don Joséf. It's just that I've been agitated. It's that Bigfoot again. It has kidnapped my son Roberto!"

"From your house? The Bigfoot was there?"

"No, it was safe at home in Monroe, Washington, where it lives, of course!"

"Not physically grabbing your son inside your own house in Mexico?"

"No, no, Roberto ran away from home and went to him. He is a crazed fan of that accursed band's horrible music."

"I am confused, Don Salvador, it sounds as if Roberto was not actually kidnapped, but went of his own free will?"

"I'm sure he was hypnotized. By long distance telephone from USA. That Bigfoot works evil magic with his voice, even over the telephone. Can't you remember how that Bigfoot almost killed ME that way back in December? That curse of his... which YOU told me was not real..."

"I did not say his curse was not real, only that I could not sense it. Bigfoot magic: who knows how that works? But go on."

"I believe it somehow seduced Roberto to kidnap himself. It may take a brujo to convince the boy to come home without a struggle."

"And you would have me to go bring Roberto back?"

"Not only that, but also to punish that creature."

"Why, Don Salvador?"

"It has attacked my family in my own home, threatening them. And attempted to murder me!"

"But you hardly seem to be dead."

"Only because my hit-men failed to kill him, so the curse was not completed. But it was the Bigfoot who forced my man to lie, saying they HAD killed him, and once I BELIEVED that I could no longer breathe and collapsed to the floor."

"What did he say to you?"

"He told me my team of assassins had been arrested for attempted murder and that their false report of having succeeded was his own little joke. Una BROMA he called it!"

"So actually, it was your agents who attacked him but were defeated? And him bothering to inform you that he was still alive may have saved your life?"

"Oh, I'm sure he would twist it around that way. But more or less... supongo que sí."

"And now you want me to do a special assignment against him. Something worse than death, I suppose?"

"Exactly."

"Señor, why not just call it quits while you're ahead?"

"No! He has offended me! Nobody gets away with that!"

"We've spoken about the wisdom of threatening Men of Power. That Bigfoot is obviously such a one. I've never met him but he seems to succeed at everything. Still quite young, but an accomplished brujo himself. I have no wish to kill him."

"Oho-- nor do I. His death might complete that curse and cause me to die as well. No, you are my worse-than-death agent, as always. I want him to live-- but only a life of SUFFERING! Crippled, paralyzed, mute."

"An ignoble fate for such a noble creature. And he has clearly proved himself to be a dangerously formidable opponent. I may just refrain from this one, Don Salvador."

"I'll pay you double."

"I don't wish to haggle..."

"Triple. Last offer. I can find another ruthless brujo."

"Hmmm... I could use the money."

"Come here to me, I have some things you will need: surgical instruments, an Ipad loaded with all the information you must have and a credit card for your expenditures.

"A credit card, you say? Very well, I shall take on the assignment. Nos veamos mañana."
