TWO WOMEN WAIT
Mother o Mother, where did father go
Out from our cabin into the blazing blind snow?
And he's been overnight now, do you think he's all right?
Hush little darling, he's just gone to town now,
He'll be back tonight.
Mother o Mother, I'm hungry and cold.
When will he come back with food for our gold?
Three days he's gone now, it just seems too long.
Hush little darling, the town is so far-off.
But he won't be long.
Mother o Mother, the sundown looks strange,
It's red just like blood on the white mountain range.
O Mother, what's wrong with your face and uour eyes?
Hush little darling, I fear for your father
And a woman just cries.
Mother o Mother, your face is so thin,
Your eyes are all dark and all pale is your skin.
You eat my share now, it's better for you.
Hush little darling, we have no food left now.
Your face is thin too.
Mother o Mother, how long can we wait?
Shouldn't we go into town before it's too late?
I know that it's far, but at least we could try.
Hush little darling, if we go out in that blizzard
we'll just get lost and die.
Mother o Mother, I know he won't come
He's dead or he's left us to die all alone.
I wish I could have been a grown woman somehow.
Hush little darling, as I'm a-looking
You're a woman right now.

I never perform this song because it's just too bleak & sad. So when I
recorded it I wrote a "happy ending version"-- then decided that it
cheapens the emotions in the song. But here it is anyway. You can
even play it if you really need to.

Father o Father, where have you been?
We feared that we never would see you again
But you've returned just in time with food and supplies
So sorry my darlings, but the storm had me stranded
In town until I found
That snowmobile-- surprise.
