In the Beginning of Time as You know it, when Man was yet a New Being,
Came Elalai, who fathered five sons
Whom he commanded to go forth in the name of Mankind
To claim and tame for each his own a share of this yet young world.
And the First Son took the mountains and vallies swathed in forest,
And the Second Son took the plains of green and grass,
And the Third Son took the deserts of salt and sand,
And the Fourth Son took the seas like glittering glass.
But the Fifth Son, the youngest, refrained to claim
For these were not for him.
We walk on wailing winter winds that whistle wild and white,
We swim through warm blue summer skies far up and out of sight,
In flight,
We own the wind and keep the sky
We are the Children of the Fifth Son of Elalai.
In the Beginning of Time as Men know it, when they were yet a New Being,
Elalai asked of his Fifth Son:
"And shall you not claim and tame, in the Name of Mankind,
Your own share of this yet young world?"
And the Fifth Son, who was small, like a bird, and lithe,
With eyes of star colors and hair of rainbow silks
And face of utter innocence, only smiled and said:
"Fear not, my Father, for I know my domain."
We climbed on clouds as children in the stratocumuli,
Earth far below, we live our lives surrounded by the sky
We fly,
Our home, the ethyr wind, blows by,
We are the Children of the Fifth Son of Elalai.
In the Beginning of Time as We know it, when Man was yet an Earthbound Thing,
The Fifth Son of Elalai conquered his environment,
And lo! a willing whirling wind wound and wrapped itself about him,
Obedient to his command.
And he ascended into the sky, light as light,
In flight no bird could match.
Thus and then was he never seen again
By his brothers bound to earth,
Although his children multiplied and were not OF the Earth,
But of the Sky.
We skip sometimes on city spires of men who live below,
With dancing steps we play between vast mountaintips of snow,
We know
The wind will always keep us high,
We are the Children of the Fifth Son of Elalai.
And in the Passage of Time as none may know it, when Man is but a temporary Being,
When the limits of the Earth shall clog and confine,
The sons of sons of the Fifth Son shall go forth in the name
Of Elalai and claim and tame for each his own
A share in this yet young Universe.
For their evolution is not yet complete,
And they shall tease and touch the planets of our sun
Then tread the tides of cosmic waves that wash on interstellar strands
When one day one Fifth Son shall smile and say:
"The sky is not enough!"
And it's sad to keep our secret from our brothers bound to land,
But we've watched them and we know we dare not let them understand
Our plan.
We build our cities hidden high,
We are the Children of the Fifth Son of Elalai.
