BEGRUDGE ME NOT THE PART I
PLAY
Jesus, all in rags and bloody, dangled from his cross.
I looked up from the mud to meet his eyes,
At his wrists all ripped and ravaged
And his side all run with red, his brow bereaved.
I winced in wonder at the darkness of the skies.
And I would help him, so I flung myself
With fingers folding fast upon the rivet
That, soaked from the stab, impaled his feet to wood,
And he spoke as to a child down upon me:
Begrudge me not my duty, nor the part that I must play,
For the lines have long been written and shall stay--
It's only what must be done; I was told to do it this way.
Satan, all in silk and suave, pranced upon his stage.
I looked up from the fire to meet his eyes,
At his wrists all gold with finery,
And his side all sleek, his brow bemused.
I hear the hammer ringing as it crucifies.
And I would hurt him, so I flung myself
With angry folded fists to meet his flesh
That, stone with age, could not be bent at all,
And he spoke as to a child down upon me:
Begrudge me not my duty, nor the part that I must play,
For the lines have long been written and shall stay--
It's only what must be done; I was told to do it this
way.
