THE GREAT BLACK
BUTTERFLY
With my crossbow strapped across my back
And my shield of hammered bronze to protect me from attack,
I soar the cloud-cliffs of the sky,
Mounted 'tween the wings
Of the Great Black Butterfly.
We circled slowly one more time around the castle wall,
I saw my people wave to me, my father standing tall.
My father's sword rang at my side,
Ringing when it knew
The Great Black Butterfly.
If you look up at the stars, they say they'll grant your every wish,
But look down at the seas, you'll see them black with dying fish.
To be clean, you must be high,
Balanced in the sky upon
The Great Black Butterfly.
Yes, I and Butterfly of gleaming velvet black,
I perched upon the million moving muscles of his back:
Upon my Quest was I,
Borne by crystal wings
Of the Great Black Butterfly.
