THE ONLY ROAD
I heard about the town while I was on my brother's track,
Someone said he went there from where no one has come back,
So I rode into the town upon my faithful giant toad,
Coming snakelike down a narrow mazelike convoluted road.
It was the Only Road,
"Have you seen my brother?" I asked a man who had no legs.
He eyed me with one tendril and drank benzine from a keg,
And said, "We don't ask no questions here, I guess you've not been told,"
But then he said, "Your brother's there, back out upon The Road,
Out on the Only Road."
"O no, that cannot be," I said, "for I have just come from there,
And if I'd seen my brother I'd have known him anywhere."
He said, "You'll never see him coming in, you'll never hear him shout,
For he's the Keeper Of The Road now, and he don't let no one out.
Not out the Only Road."
I rode back out and found my brother sitting there upon his rock
Just out where the Road began, and I received a shock:
For he held his sword-point to me, and he said, "You'll not go by,
This Road is closed to all who go, excepting those who die,
For it's the Only Road."
"Ah, but can't you recognize me?" I reached out to touch his hand,
His sword rang on my armour and I dropped into the sand,
And in desparation drew my sword, and in terror and in shock
I lay my brother bleeding blue-black blood there upon his rock.
Out on the Only Road.
And as I stood over my dead brother with my tears like jewelry
A stranger rode up on his rat and tried to talk to me:
"I see you've killed The Keeper, the Road is open, we can go!"
I held my sword-point to him and said, No!--
Not while I'm the Keeper of The Road!"
And it's the Only Road.
