THE ROMANCE OF WAR
I was cloned from the genes of some prize-winning soldier
Who had just the traits that were sought
By scientists breeding the ultimate warrior:
I happen to be what they got.
To give me ten times human strength and endurance
They modified my DNA, hey,
Linked up my head with their combat computer,
I'm programmed to kill and obey.
At first they just made twenty of me, oh yeah,
But soon they made ten thousand more,
Those scientists and politicians,
Caught up in the Romance of War.
They sent me to war in an innocent country
That did not have soldiers like me;
Brittle boys broke in my fingers like matchwood,
We tasted our first victory.
Their army was shattered, their populace scattered
And living on what they could steal.
I was hit by some bullets and schrapnel,
It took me two hours to heal.
Guns and grenades and clawed fingers, oh yeah,
I know what my weapons are for,
And I do enjoy doing my duty,
Alive for the Romance of War.
The next time they had us protecting our leaders
Against enemies of the State:
Students and lawyers and housewives united
Protesting a law that they hate.
I almost could sympathize with them but I
Had never been programmed that way, hey,
I served who was pushing my buttons,
I only could kill and obey.
But still, life was good in the Clonewarrior camps,
We had absolute esprit-de-corps,
Proudly the Law and the Power of Man,
Our own Law was the Romance of War.
And the Ultra-war they prepared for finally happened,
And I and my fellows were sent
At last against Superclones of the Great Enemy,
One hundred thousand of us went.
We paradropped into the enemy lines,
The opposition made its stand, and
Bullet or bombs could not stop us, o no,
We took up the battle by hand.
And then we saw that these soldiers we fought
Were equal to no one before:
You had to admire these Clonewarrior Women
Adept in the Romance of War.
I caught her and grappled and clenched in the darkness,
My blood became mixed with her sweat,
Our uniforms shredded away into tatters,
Our bodies were naked and wet.
As our struggles dissolved into passion
The computer was chattering, "Slay! Slay!"
But I was not tuned to that order just then,
Thus I did learn to disobey.
I was attuned to this Mate I had found,
And I would not be her conqueror.
Flesh becomes one when two warriors embrace,
Ours was a Romance of War.
Scientists from my unit came investigating,
They dissected her just to see.
I know that these men in white coats are my fathers,
But they're all just Mothers to me.
I slipped out of camp in the dark before dawn
And I slashed thirteen throats on my way, hey,
I had been trained to obey them, but they
Forgot to take my soul away.
I've got to go find her, don't stand in my way,
I can love any copy of her.
And the thousands of me and the thousands of she
Will teach Man the Romance of War.
