HIGHWAY ROMANCE

songbook

Yes, I have been here before.
I loved and I lost and I just had to go,
But I never forgot Copenhagen was where she would be.
For the last fifteen years I've been writing to her
And she kept on writing to me,
So I wrote to her that I would soon go upon a journey:
     Said someday I just may
Pass that way. She wrote: "Hey,
Here is a place you can stay."

But I'm on this journey, you see,
So how can I stay if I want to stay free?
          Just can't be--but maybe I could see
Her, I think, for a drink, or a dance,
          And maybe some highway romance.

So I start out on my big trip,
Around the whole world for a year, I'm equipped,
I've got money and time and at last I am totally free.
So of course I came here right away and we met,
And yes, it was passionately--
The girl I once loved now this woman who wished to love me.
Well, it's you, my old True
Love, how do you do? Guess we get to find out if it's true
That True Love can really come true.

But I'm on this journey, you see,
Adventurous guy on the road, bold and free,
Yeah, that's me, on my way--or have I made
A mistake by taking a chance
On a little bit of highway romance?

Shall I sing of how your beauty has captured me?
Or was it your personality?
Who cares? I'm where I could remain.
But older and wiser, we don't have to look
To see that a journey remains--
If you don't know that feeling it can't be explained or contained,
You just know when to go,
So yes or no? maybe so?
Pack up your bag and let's go.

We are on this journey, you see,
We go down the road toward eternity,
Be with me. Let us be fellow travellers
Until we die, you and I, holding hands
          Off on a highway romance.

          Off on a highway romance.
