LOVING IS THE WAY

songbook

At first you learn of loving from your father and your mother,
And you're supposed to love your neighbor just as if he was your brother,
And you really love your friends, and then one day you discover
That you love your Lover like no other before.
And you'll love him til you can't love any more.

For you can lust for Your Lover, yes, and you may truly prize him,
Enjoy his handsome ways, or perhaps you must disguise him,
Or everything can turn around, until you despise him,
And that can be agonizing, within your eyes--within your eyes-- him above
Anyone you ever thought you loved.

And then later on you realize that this happens all the time,
You think you see The Vision and discover you are blind,
Until you have loved so many, and have left so much behind,
And cry "This is the last time!" even as you find--find another face.
You know, love is relative to Time and Space.

And you could say love and not mean it,
Or could mean love and not say it,
Or might only mean you like him,
Or that you want to keep him,
Or maybe that you'd like to sleep with him,
Or that your soul is deep with him,
Or that you're hurt where only he can heal.
Because loving is the way you're made to feel.

And so lovers come and go forever in a fine parade,
Seems the one thing you keep forever is the love that has been made,
And there might never be some final lover with whom you have stayed
In all the games that you have played when you've said--when you've said,
   "This love is all!"
You know, loving can be the flight before the fall.

For there's danger in emotion and there's risk in putting trust,
Why take a chance on feeling pain--or joy or hate or lust?
For love is such a gamble, but then so is Life, we must.
You know that someday we'll be dust and it's just--just that I can see
What special lovers you and I might be.

For yes, I love you mightily, of that you can be sure,
And I will not tell you lies like that I have not loved before,
But I can tell you with all honesty that I've not loved someone more
And I want you to the core and I feel for you like brand new,
Because loving you is what I've got to do.

And I could say love and not mean it,
Or could mean love and not say it,
Or might only mean I like you,
Or that I want to keep you,
Or maybe that I'd like to sleep with you,
Or that my soul is deep with you,
Or that I'm hurt where only you can heal.
Because loving is the way I'm made to feel.

Just like loving is the way you're made to feel.
That's right, loving is the way we're made to feel.
