SONG TO SOMEONE

chords

songbook

Take note that I wrote this song long ago,
Knowing I'd sing it to you someday,
Knowing somehow that we'd meet this way,
Knowing I'd know who you were right away,
But not knowing where, when or why.

Wondering just how that I knew what I wrote,
That moment and this one connected just then.
Although wondering who, although wondering when,
I knew you were out there, our love predestined,
A passionate lover, a valuable friend

And the words of this song drifted by
And told me to sing them when I tell you Hi.
I'm telling you Hi.

And I know who you are,
Don't you know who I am?
Well, I'm the one who wrote this song,
And you're the one who understands.

And now I am singing this song just for you,
I never have sung it for someone before--
Oh, almost a few times, when I just wasn't sure,
But I kept on waiting, like I knew who you were,
And I saved this song till tonight.

And it's singing itself, as I knew it would do,
Though I've not rehearsed or played it for so long,
I just couldn't sing it like any old song:
When I wrote it I knew that to waste it was wrong,
So I put it aside and I thought it was gone

But it's easy to sing when it's right,
And let this song be the way I tell you Hi.
I'm telling you Hi.

And I know who you are,
Don't you know who I am?
Well, I'm the one who wrote this song,
And you're the one who understands.

When I first wrote this song it was perfectly true,
But it went the way that all virgin things do,
I spent it on someone who almost was you,
But she wasn't, nor were any of the others who
Heard it and never said Hi.

Now I sing it for crowds, I don't care any more,
How foolish to think you might know who it's for.
Besides, there were ladies I needed to bluff,
And, well, it's a good one to show off my stuff,
So I sang it out proudly, just expert enough,

While turning it into a lie,
But hoping you'll hear me some day and say Hi.
C'mon, say Hi.

I don't know who you are,
You don't know who I am,
But I'm the one who wrote this song,
And you're the one who understands.
